ICOB 2011, UK Dispatch ~ Banyakigezi and their friends from all over the world converged in London UK over the weekend of July 28-31, 2011 for the International Community of Banyakigezi (ICOB) ninth annual convention.

Following a tradition of annual conventions that began in Canada in 2003 and continue today, the Banyakigezi community strategized on developing their region in southwestern Uganda.

The meeting in London was arguably the best organized in their series of uninterrupted 9 annual meetings and went a long way in fulfilling the aspirations and wishes of the Banyakigezi. The geographic, social and political diversity and active participation of the members, as well as the quality and caliber of the presenters was impressive.

The Guest of Honour was ICT Minister Hon Dr Rukana Rugunda.

Uganda’s High Commissioner to the London, HE Ambassador Joan Rwabyomere gave the opening remarks while Prince Simon Olimi Kabuzi of Tooro gave the keynote address. Lead speakers were Prof Emanuel Muranga, Prof Augustus Niwagaba, Rev Canon Dr Gideon Byamugisha and Minister Banyenzaki who presented the government view. The Culture session on Friday was moderated by the Vision Group of Companies CEO Mr. Robert Kabushenga.

Among the 180 delegates was MP Rukiga Jack Sabiiti, Senior Special Advisor to the President Mr. Steven Bamwanga, Mr. Dan Mugarura and the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon Nandala Mafabi. Col Samson Mande also attended.

At their grand finale fundraising dinner, the Banyakigezi raised 42,945,650 UGX towards their flagship Kigezi education Fund.

This new level of success of their organisation is credit to the excellent mobilisation and organisational skills of their new President Mr Mujungu who was elected last year replacing Dr Frank Byamugisha who had served out the allowable two terms.
