By Ronnie Mayanja, UNAA Times Editor ~ It was a big night for African music when the Afrotainment Family of Channels and Museke Inc. held the very first Museke Online Africa Music Awards that were broadcast live on Afrotainment Channels carried on the Dish Network. The show fused African elements like dance, fashion and music in celebrating the best in African music, as chosen by an online audience of fans.

Among the many names that showed up for the red carpet was Rwandan-born European based Iyadede who later joined Fally Ipupa on stage. Other notable performers included Viviane Ndour the diva from Senegal, Ghana’s own highly acclaimed Wordsmith Blitz the Ambassador who introduced rap in a jazzy affair and the Afropean sisters Les Nubians.

But it was the increasingly popular Congolese star Fally Ipupa who carried the day with his performance that included a soundtrack to the evening of Afro-glamor, soukous dancing and more. Although there were some system mal-functions the event in itself was a success in bringing together top African musical and fashion icons.

However the biggest surprise or perhaps the biggest moment of the night came when the African musical queen from the West African nation of Benin, Angelique Kidjo, received a Lifetime Achievement award for her role in inspiring African musicians worldwide. She was so gracious in her speech crediting her father who passed away in 2008 for always urging her on to pursue her dream. She concluded her speech with a spectacular acapella performance that earned her a standing ovation.

Other highlights included African fashion led by Niger-born haute couture designer Alphadi who dressed up some of the show hostesses. Designers and fashion icons from Mauritania and Paris also attend the star studded event.

The Museke Music awards is the brainchild of  Tumi Diseko of Museke Inc. who together with Afrotainment an African channel dedicated to African programming brought us these awards.

Though nominated for Song of the Year, Uganda’s Maurice Kirya was edged out of contention by Fally Ipupa the french speaking artist who won best male and artist of the year awards while female artist of the year was Vivian Ndour from Senegal.

The show was held at the Afrotainment studios in New york on September 24th and broadcast live on Dish Network Afrotainment channels 751 and 667. The event sponsors included Dish network, Western Union, Arik Air, First Bank of Nigeria and Afrotainment Tv. Here is a complete list of all the major winners.
