Harriet Kanyike’s funeral service in Uganda.

By Ronnie Mayanja — The funeral service for the late Harriet Gorretti Kanyike, 45, of Waltham, Massachusetts was held yesterday at St. Mary’s Catholic Parish and presided over by the Rev. Father Michael Nolan and Father Sentamu. Harriet Kanyike lost her battle with Colon Cancer on November 4th at Brighams and Woman’s hospital after being hospitalised from August 9th 2012.

Harriet was born in Fort Portal, Uganda on June 12, 1967 to The Honorable Anthony William Henry and Robinah Perusio Abooki Kanyike. She came to United States where worked as a Nurse at the Marist Hill Nursing Home. She is survived by her beloved children, Nathaniel Tebigwayo and Dorothy Mulo. She is the cherished sister of Bennet Kanyike, Joyce Kanyike, Allan Kanyike, Douglas Kanyike, Kenneth Ddamba Kanyike, Robert Kanyike, Brian Kanyike, Anthony Kanyike, Susan Kanyike and Juliet Kanyike.

The visitation and funeral service began at 4pm with a viewing ceremony that went on till about 6pm when the funeral Mass began with the eulogy of Harriet’s life story and the celebration of her love for the Boston community. Later in the evening the community gathered for a thanksgiving dinner in the church basement were some old girls of Namagunga Senior Secondary school that Harriet taught Geography many years ago shared more stories about their encounter with the teacher they knew and loved.

The mourners included community leaders from various religious faiths as well as people who had travelled from out of State to bid Harriet farewell. The late Harriet Kanyike will be laid to rest at her ancestral home in Busabaga, Uganda.
