Boston — The Ugandan Professionals Network based in Boston (the “UPN”) was launched on the April 13th, 2013 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Woburn, Massachusetts. The event, which attracted guests from Washington DC, Connecticut, New york and the Bay State, started with a networking reception at 6:00pm.

Following the networking session the president of the group, Ritah Nakandi, introduced the UPN vision. She explained that their mission is to connect professionals within the Ugandan immigrant community in the United States, and to enable Ugandan immigrants to thrive professionally through networking, education and skills training.

The President’s presentation was followed by a panel of four members of the UPN, all graduate students, who further discussed the role that the UPN would play in fostering the professional experience within the community. Those present also discussed their experiences as immigrants pursuing different professional careers in the US and answered questions from the guests.

A speech from the keynote speaker Mrs. Karen Burns White, the Deputy Associate Director at Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, crowned the event by encouraging attendees to know their calling, purpose, strengths and  appreciate their brand.  Mrs. Burns-White also urged attendees to be open to feedback because it makes you better. “The goal in knowing your strength is that you will excel in maximizing your potential and working around areas of your opportunity”, she further noted.  She also informed attendees that one’s brand opens doors and creates a lasting impression on your potential clients and it encourages risks taking.

For a first of its kind in the Boston area and perhaps North America,  guests were quite pleased by the initiative, organization and the networking opportunity to connect with fellow professionals.
