Just ask Lona Dunlap. She had a sprained ankle and was on crutches. So what did her friendly local TSA screener do? He took away her crutches and forced her to stand on her sprained ankle, causing two fractures. For example, banks hold a large number of financial assets on their balance sheets (besides just customer deposits), including CMBS, RMBS, swaps, derivatives, etc. During the financial crisis in 2007 2008, the values of these mortgage products and complex derivatives were eventually discovered to be worth just a fraction of what they were recorded as on the bank’s balance sheet. As a result, the banks had to write off losses on these investments, which significantly lowered the bank’s book values.
