Kampala- The Monitor website remains the most visited Ugandan website, according to Alexa, a web information and tracking company. Alexa’s ranking is a running tally that calculates a website’s daily number of visitors and pages viewed over the past month, updating the statistics daily.

Their most current rankings as of yesterday, have the Daily Monitor website, www.monitor.co.ug, topping the most popular local websites, a position it has maintained over the past year. With more and more readers getting their news online, this ranking points not only at Daily Monitor’s large and growing reach, but also its entrenchment as Uganda’s number one source of news and information.

The largest percentage of the visitors to the website, 73.6 per cent, come from Uganda. These are followed by visitors from the United Kingdom at 4.1 per cent and 4.0 per cent from the United States.

Commenting about the ranking, Mr Don Wanyama, the managing editor for the dailies, said: “This is proof that we remain the most influential and innovative media house in Uganda. We were the first media house to start a website back in the early 90s. Since then, we have continued to set the pace, tapping into changes in technology but also ensuring that we stay as ahead as the prime source of reliable, factual and independent news.”

He added: “It is a mark of confidence from our readers. We know that our competitors keep aping us but this shows that they still have a long way to go in equaling us.”
Monitor Publications produces the Daily Monitor, Saturday Monitor and Sunday Monitor, as well as its website.

The website, as the Alexa rankings show, reaches more readers than any other Ugandan newspaper. Globally, according to Alexa, the Monitor website is 4,843 places above its nearest local competitor, The New Vision.
