PRESS RELEASE — Since 2003 Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) arranged ‘The Home is Best’ Summit for the Ugandans in the Diaspora every December when they came back home for holidays. The Summit activities coupled with a Business Forum were geared at updating the Ugandan Diaspora on the social, economic and political landscape of the country, in order to encourage them to take a look at the continuous efforts at improving the investment environment so that they could invest back home, instead of sending money for consumption only.

With time, a number of cultural groupings have evolved to take this development closer to the grass roots in a bid to invest not only in Uganda generally, but invest upcountry where they come from. It is on this basis that this year ‘The Home is Best Summit’ will not take place. UIA is partnering with Ugandan Diaspora Network and other Diaspora Associations to continue this initiative through the various cultural conventions taking place this month (December 2013).

The conventions include:

1. Busoga Convention ‘Olwekobaano’ on 21st December in Jinja
2. The Buganda ‘Ttabamiruka’ Convention from 18th to 19th December
3. International Community of the Banyakigezi Convention from 27th to 30th December in Rukungiri
3. And to crown it all the ‘The 3rd Ugandan Diaspora Social Networking Gala’, scheduled to take place at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Monday 30th December 2013 from 6.00 pm.

It has however been realized that even though there are cultural groupings organizing business summits, there is a need to organize a national one that brings all the cultural groupings together to bring about cohesion in developing the country as a whole. UIA, will therefore next year 2014, resume the ‘Home is Best Summit’.

It is important to note that UIA has not worked in isolation on the initiative to attract Ugandan Diaspora back home to invest. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diaspora Desk under the Capacity Building and Strengthening Diaspora Resource Mobilization and Utilization Project, generously funded the compilation of a Compendium of Business and Investment Opportunities for the Diaspora, which is available in hard and soft copies, as well as accessible on UIA’s website. http://www.ugandainvest.go.ug/

The funds have also supported the feasibility study for the development of the ‘International Diaspora Bond’, an instrument through which Ugandans in Diaspora can investment in Government securities. This is being spearheaded by the Bank of Uganda. Under the same programme, some work is being done to develop a Diaspora Policy. Details of this initiative are available with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

UIA takes this opportunity to welcome back home all the Ugandans in the Diaspora who are in Uganda this holiday season and assure them that the UIA offices will remain open to facilitate whoever who would like to venture into investment. We also look forward to meeting with them at all the planned activities.
