The article below first appeared in the print version of the Daily Monitor: By Lawrence Ogwal — For the third time, the Ugandan Diaspora Social Networking Event was held at Kampala Serena Hotel last Monday. This is an event which is organised annually to crown the year and recognise Ugandan nationals living abroad.

The event kicked off at 6pm with interactions and networking which involved Ugandans who have settled all over the world and their fellow citizens who live at home. Revellers were later ushered into the hotel’s Victoria Hall. The guest of honour was the Vice President of Uganda Hon Edward Ssekandi and other notable guests included Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of Oxfam.

Those who attended the event parted with Shs100,000 but it was worth it as it came with dinner, and free flow of drinks throughout the night.

There was an awarding ceremony to recognise those who have made career breakthroughs and they included, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine who was recognized for starring in the Hollywood blockbuster movie the Blood Diamonds and Hon Edward Ssekandi who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for support and interest in diaspora affairs over the years.

Other recipients included Patrick Masambu, the Deputy Director General of the International Telecommunications Satelitte Organisation, Ambassador Rhoda Tumusiime, the Commissioner and cabinet secretary for Rural Economy and Agriculture at the African Union, Ruth Bahika, a philanthropist,  founder Grace Villas and President International Community of the Banyakigezi.

Entertainment of the night was from Hiphop artiste Navio, Comedian Daniel Omara, Aroma Band and the Ndere troupe who performed. Designers Martha Jabo and US based Solome Katongole showcased their trending outfits. With a few minutes left to midnight, the event was wrapped and revellers drove to Cayenne for the after party. — See related link below
