The Africa-America Institute to Hold Panel Discussion on Harnessing the Potential of the Power Africa Initiative

Today, more than two-thirds of sub-Saharan Africans are living without access to energy. In rural communities, that number climbs to an astounding 85 percent. In June 2013, President Barack Obama launched “Power Africa”, a new U.S. initiative that aims to double access to reliable, sustainable energy in sub-Saharan Africa. The presidential initiative is committing $7 billion dollars over the next five years to support the energy needs of six African countries, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

The Africa-America Institute will hold a timely and informative panel discussion on January 30 in New York City to explore the challenges and economic potential of President Obama’s “Power Africa” Initiative in enhancing Africa’s integration into the global economy and the creation of new jobs and opportunities. Top panelists from the private and public sectors will offer perspectives on strengthening the technical infrastructure and human resource needs to develop and expand Africa’s access to energy and promote sustainable development and growth.
