Dr. Margaret Mungherera, was elected unopposed to the presidency of the World Medical Association on 19th October 2012 during the WMA’s annual General Assembly held in Bangkok, Thailand. As an accomplished Ugandan medical success story abroad Dr. Mungerera has graciously accepted our invitation to attend the Diaspora Homecoming gala were she will be recognized were she will be recognized for her contribution in the medical field.

Dr. Mungherera, 54, has been a doctor for over 30 years and a psychiatrist for 20 years with forensic psychiatry as her special area of interest. She studied medicine at Makerere University Medical School in Kampala, Uganda, before taking a diploma in tropical medicine at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Over the past 10 years she was senior consultant psychiatrist at Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala. She was a founder member of Uganda Women Medical Doctors Association and was the first woman in Uganda to be elected president of the Uganda Medical Association in 1998 and again in 2010.

She was in the forefront of bringing together the national medical associations in Eastern Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda) long before the revived East African Community started its work.
