Jazz Safari

Chano8 Online — It was an evening of pompous glitz and glamour as Jazz enthusiasts congregated at Kampala Serena’s Victoria Ball room for an evening of smooth Saxo-Jazz-funk and sultry soul ballads at the annual Nile Gold Jazz Safari from celebrated international artistes; Saxophonist Kirk Whalum and RnB crooner Karyn White.

The beaming smiles right at the entrance on the faces of the fans wrote an understandable story of high expectations as the sauntered in to get their souls cleansed with epic euphoria from an assortment of classic tunes finely assembled by the much sort after headlining acts.

With guests dressed to kill, and some overzealous in their choice of attire, the ambience was understandably classy and all was good save for a delay in the start of performances caused by ‘Kampala’s Friday traffic’ we would later learn from the evening’s MC Gaetano Kaggwa who kept the early birds cheered up with a few jokes here and there.

The Urban TV presenter and former Big Brother housemate would later turn chief cheerleader to the chagrin of onlookers as he got absorbed into the precision presentations he must have waited to consume in extravagant abundance.

So when Stephen Kigozi also known as Steve keys played a combination of covers and original compositions to warm up the stage, the number of revellers had swelled to eye-catching proportions, which also announced the start of a musical journey of heart-melting instrumentation and inspirational vocal flows accompanied by a session of powerful praise and worship by ordained minister Kirk Whalum. His session was majorly soulful with inhibited goose bump-evoking emotions as he took the fans to a tour of his musical journey now spanning over three decades.

Before the music thirst was not yet fully quenched, the soothing sounds of Kirk’s Saxophone kept echoing in the hearts of the fans as he waved goodbye to prepare the stage for the multi talented singer/songwriter and performer Karyn White whose grand entrance and energetic movements woke the fans from their slumber.

She had something up her sleeves to leave an impression and oh boy did she do that to perfection with her sleazy dance movements and angelic soul rhythms that kept the heat to boiling point. And then the fans could not hold it any more after a platonic of play list lifted majority of them off the comfort of their VIP seats with her songs like ‘The way you love me’, Secret Rendezvous’, Superwoman and Love saw doing the magic.

The award winning Los Angeles native drew cheers and tears from the crowd when she invited two men on stage to perform with her that turned steamy with the squeeze dance and left many yearning for more when she concluded her performances at around half past 11 with the majority of the hypnotized crowd remaining seated much as she came back to do one more goodbye song.

The 8th annual Nile Gold Jazz Safari was made possible courtesy of Nile Breweries, Rwenzori Premium water, Guvnor, Birtish Airways, Jazz FM and Coca Cola.
