KAMPALA- The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has said it will invite its former secretary general Amama Mbabazi to attend the party’s delegates’ conference between October 30 and November 2.

Mr Mbabazi was technically removed from the post of NRM secretary general following the amendment of the party constitution in December last year to substitute elective top positions with appointed officials at the secretariat.

He has since declared that he will stand for president as an independent against President Museveni, the NRM chairman.

Speaking at a joint press conference yesterday, NRM officials led by deputy secretary general Richard Todwong said the former party leader is expected to be part of the activities leading to the president’s nomination on November 3.

“Hon Amama Mbabazi is in Parliament on the NRM ticket and we invite all NRM MPs (and) Ms Jacqueline (Mbabazi) is the chairperson of the women’s league,” Mr Todwong said, adding: “According to our constitution they are supposed to attend.”

When Mr Mbabazi fell out with his former ally and the party he claims he is still a member of, there was talk that he will face the party’s disciplinary committee.

However, asked why it has taken long to discipline the former SG, Mr Todwong said: “There is no deadline for disciplining a member. What will you do (in case of dismissal) if Hon Mbabazi comes back? Bukenya was away for, I don’t know how many years,” he said.

Mbabazi considers
When we contacted the communications director of Mr Mbabazi campaign task force, Ms Josephine Mayanja-Nkangi, on whether Mr Mbabazi would attend, she said: “They are delegates so it is not a personal invitation, when the invitation comes they will consider whether or not to attend.”

Police has twice blocked Mr Mbabazi when he tried to conduct consultations with voters under his Go Forward pressure group in the run to the 2016 presidential nominations.

Nevertheless Mr Mbabazi has not denounced the party which he helped to form, insisting he believes in the original ideals of the NRM.
