Ugandans living in the diaspora gathered at Kampala Serena hotel on 30th December Saturday evening to network and celebrate those that fly Uganda’s flag high wherever they live.

Marking its seventh edition, the Diaspora Networking Gala attracts many local companies looking to tap into the $1 billion remitted annually by the ba-summer, as they are locally known.

The night also saw four awards being given out. One of the recipients, Lt Col Dr Ivan Edwards, has been living in the USA since the 1980s and is now a flight surgeon in the US Air Force Reserve. He was also the keynote speaker at the event.

“Let us plan. It takes time, commitment and dedication. Stick to the plan and do not get into get-rich-quick schemes,” he said.

Also awarded was Solome Nanvule Sembeguya of Teenage Mother Foundation; Israel Wamala (posthumously), who was founding editor of BBC Focus On Africa, and NBS TV for being the diaspora-preferred source of news.

Chief guest, Vice President Edward Sekandi, urged his hosts to share skills with other Ugandans by investing locally. But it was not all business; Kenneth Mugabi, Irene Ntale, Dr Hilderman, The Triplets Ghetto Kids and comedian Daniel Omara entertained guests.

The Ghetto Kids used the platform to announce their rebrand as singers/dancers, performing their debut song, Maama.
