UGANDA MARTYRS DAY 2018 (UMD’18) Press/Media Release

Dear community of believers,

I great you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The annual commemoration of the feast of the Uganda Martyrs (Charles Lwanga and his Companions) is once again around the corner! This year, the Ugandan Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Boston (UCCB) will commemorate the feast of the Uganda Martyrs on June10th, 2018 starting with a solemn Mass at 1:00pm at St. Mary Parish 133 School St. Waltham, MA 02451. Thereafter, the community and all guests will gather for dinner at the Marriott Hotel located at 2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA 02466.

The Uganda Martyrs are the 22 men whose martyrdom in 1886 is considered the spark that ignited the flame of Christianity in modern Africa. This year marks 54 years since their canonization by Pope Paul VI in 1964. There are also two Ugandan martyrs of a later period, Blessed Daudi Okelo and Jildo Irwa, who are en route to canonization. They died at Paimol in 1918 and were beatified in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. The Uganda Martyrs are revered for their faith, their courage, and their witness to Christ.

Every year on the second Sunday of June, the Ugandan Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Boston, and pilgrims from across the United States and beyond gather to celebrate the feast of the Uganda Martyrs here in Boston, Massachusetts. Last year the celebration was graced by the Right Reverend Bishop Robert Kasaija Muhiirwa of Fort Portal Diocese, who was the main celebrant and guest of honor. The celebration was attended by over 500 pilgrims that included many priests, religious, and laity from across the United States, Uganda, and beyond.

This year we are honored to host His Excellency Archbishop Michael August Blume S.V.D., Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, who will be the main celebrant. The celebration will also be graced by the presence of His Excellency Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. As in years past, fervor and excitement in the community is high, as the organizing gets underway. The celebration begins with a 9-day novena which concludes on the evening of Saturday June 9th, after the UMD vigil Mass.

We hope to see many of you at this year’s celebration!
