Dr. Ivan Edwards, a medical doctor and senior military officer, born in Uganda and emigrated to the US, was inducted, in August 2021, as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). The induction is a prestigious award for his achievements in the areas of social progress, development, and health care delivery.

Dr. Edwards has served in various unserved areas (e.g. he co-founded a sponsorship program for disadvantaged children in Uganda, in the late 1980s to early 1990s). He instituted rehabilitation programs for patients with pain syndromes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological diseases (here in the US), advocated and taught the principles of self-improvement, equity, and personal growth (at various times and in various communities) through media, speeches, and direct interaction. He has also worked with military veterans in a 5-hospital system (in the US) and served as a wellness physician in a large municipal fire department with access to first responders.

He was also recently involved, with key global players, in a post COVID Uganda initiative. Simply put, his service mantra has been serving others in need–at home and abroad.

The Royal Society of Arts (RSA), based in London and founded in 1754, is an apolitical and charitable organization devoted to finding practical solutions to today’s social challenges. Its founding principle was “to embolden enterprise, enlarge science, refine arts, improve our manufactures and extend our commerce”. Members of the Society are called Fellows and are from a diverse background (from Nelson Mandela, Stephen Hawking, Charles Dickens to Benjamin Franklin—to name a few). What all Fellows share, though, is a commitment to civic innovation and social progress.

The RSA’s Patron is currently Queen Elizabeth II. The president is Princess Anne. Fellows of the RSA are entitled to use the post-nominal letters FRSA after their name.

“My alignment with the reputable RSA”, Dr. Edwards says, “will enhance the collective mission of advancing practical solutions to today’s challenges. I won’t be alone thinking through ideas and coming up with solutions; I will have access to a global community of proactive problem solvers and doers.”
