Ugandan president congratulates southern Sudan upon successful referendum
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni over the weekend congratulated the people of southern Sudan upon attaining autonomy through the referendum that was conducted to secede from the northern part.
Museveni said here on Sunday said, “I am glad we have come to the end of that big problem.”
During the two decades of war between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the south and the Sudanese government, thousands of southern Sudanese fled to neighboring Uganda and other counties to seek refugee.
In 2005, the SPLA and the Sudanese government signed a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) to end the protracted war.
In the CPA, both parties agreed to hold a referendum which will determine whether the south secedes from the north.
