By Ronnie Mayanja, Dispatch from Kampala, UNAA Times Online ~ A campaign dubbed ‘Kampala City Yange’ was launched on 11.11.11 at 11am at Kampala Capital City Authority grounds by a group of young city activists advocating for keeping Kampala Clean through a series of monthly social themes of creating a more vibrant city that all Kampala inhabitants can enjoy.

Founded a number of years ago at Old Kampala,  the City is made up of five boroughs; Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division and Lubaga Division.

However through Uganda’s tumultuous past the city has seen abused and neglect over the years with many of its infrastructure completed destroyed or non functional. It is this state of affairs that partly prompted the central government to create a new Kampala Capital City Authority led by Jennifer Musisi and a new ministry portfolio charged with Kampala affairs.

In her remarks at the Kampala City Yange launch the KCCA Executive Director called on all Kampala inhabitants to take up the responsibility and initiative of making Kampala a sprawling metropolis. Kampala City Yange is a great initiative that needs all our support especially in the creation of a portal that serves city residents and visitors.

The other major highlight was the unveiling of new music videos featuring some of Kampala’s leading artists promoting Kampala City.

Among the many guests present were the Minister In Charge of the Presidency and Kampala Capital City Authority Princess Kabakumba Masitko, the Chief Operating Officer of Warid Telecom in Uganda,  many councilors and representatives from the various boroughs of Kampala city.

Absent with apology was Kampala’s new mayor Erias Lukwago who had travelled to Mecca for Islamic pilgrimage.

However given Kampala’s current population, the event lacked numbers. Perhaps the organising should shoot for 50 years of our Independence as a great opportunity to reload this concept. The event was organised by the Institute Of Country Pride and sponsored by Warid Telecom.
