By Ronnie Mayanja, Dispatch from Kampala, UNAA Times Online ~ If you asked me what I enjoy in my free time, fashion and design will always feature right up there. Some might even ask, how can a guy enjoy fashion and design?, but I do, and will go to great lengths to attend such events.

I’ve got friends in the fashion world — Camilla Barungi has been featured in Project Runway, Solome Katongole’s designs have been showcased at the Buffalo Mercedes Benz fashion week, and, in 2009, I had the pleasure of seeing Stella Atal unveil her collection at the Miss Africa USA Pageant.

All these names represent accomplished fashion designers. But for me one fashion experience tops them all: Samson ‘Xenson’ Ssenkaaba’s Futuristic Fashion Show held at Kampala Serena’s Victoria Hall.

At this Redd’s-sponsored event, Xenson proved that he is still Uganda’s, if not Africa’s, King of Fashion. The event, managed by Fenon Entertainment, saw some real choreographed designs by Stella Atal and Latif Madoi who designed 8 outfits in 24 minutes in an attempt to break his own record. There were some “hail Mary” moments when a few wardrobe malfunctions occurred on stage while the models were trying on some of Latif’s outfits, and it’s unlikely the roving paparazzi spared the poor souls in their tabloids.

The event MC, Isaac Rucci, did not disappoint, showering revellers with jokes about his past experiences living abroad. I am not exactly sure where one can actually wear Xenson’s futuristic designs but he surely left a mark and made a statement.

He also treated the audience to an artistic journey that took on different themes, cementing his creative touch and prowess in transforming any piece of fabric. Most impressive was how he re-invents denim jeans and creates an entire collection out of it.

He does a great job with white bark cloth and reeds, borrowing from traditions of our ancestors.

The precision with which Xenson designs his clothes definitely separates him from the competition, proving that he is a true artist who has mastered all the elements of style and fashion something that we as Ugandans ought to celebrate.

Xenson Fashions will also be showcased at the Uganda Diaspora Social Networking summit in Kampala on December 29. His fashions have been featured at the New York, Paris, Brazil, Canada and East Africa fashion weeks. Xenson has received numerous fashion awards. He is a true Ugandan icon and fashion ambassador whose gift and talent is bound to take him places!

UNAA Times now brings you some of the highlights from this Fashion Bonanza!
