By Ronnie Mayanja and Agencies – Ethiopian Airlines, became the first airline in the world outside Japan to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.  In what was a long but worthwhile wait on a Tuesday August 21st  evening the Dreamliner touched down at  Entebbe International Airport after making a stop over in Nairobi, Kenya. This trip dubbed the rotating destination tour came on the heels of what was the First Ethiopian Dreamliner’s arrival in Addis Ababa at Bole International Airport on 17 August 2012.

“The Dream Tour,” began on August 18, 2012, with a sightseeing flight to Mount Kilimanjaro for around 270 invited guests, consisting of Ministers, Ambassadors, other VIPs, Ethiopian ShebaMiles Gold Members and media. According to Mr Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian, “Ethiopian Airlines is a truly indigenous African airline, which has been pioneering the African aviation for the last 67 years and it is only natural for us to deploy our first B787 in Africa. In affirmation of its commitment as Africa’s flagship carrier, we are naming our 1st B787 Dreamliner as “Africa First” ”. Once the airline takes delivery of its 2nd Dreamliner, the aircraft will operate on an assigned scheduled route, which will be announced in near future.

The function held at the Entebbe International Airport VIP lounge was attended by Government representatives including the Minister of State for Transport- Hon. Stephen Chebrot, Tour Operators, Officials from the Civil Aviation Authority [CAA] and visitors from the Federal Aviation Authority in the US. [FAA]. In his remarks the Minsiter of State For Transport noted that Uganda’s Aviation traffic grew from 100,000 passengers in 1991 to now 1.2 Million passengers in 2012. There was alot of excitement around Entebbe following the arrival of the aircraft that was greeted the traditional water cannon trucks and some Champaigne toast with the Flight Captain, Ethiopian Airlines Country Manager to Uganda Mrs Regassa and a few invited guests.

Ethiopian Airlines becomes the first flight operator in Africa to receive the long awaited composite jet – the Boeing 787 Dreamliner range of aircraft. The State-run airline described as the fastest growing airline business in Africa, took delivery of the first long awaited Boeing 787 Dreamliner on Tuesday August 14, which has been named ‘First African’ on August 14, in Seattle, Washington.
