Emirates Airlines has commenced daily flights between Entebbe and Washington Dulles International Airport according to Khalid Alzarouni, the Emirates Country Manager Uganda. Alzarouni noted that Ugandans had significant business interests in DC and they needed a “reliable and convenient airline to fly them.” “Uganda is also a top destination for American tourists and DC also hosts a range of other international conferences that Ugandans usually attend,” he adds.

Entebbe International Airport has for the last one and a half years seen a rise in daily flights by various airlines like British Airways, South African Airways, Qatar Airways and Emirates Airlines to destinations like London, Johannesburg, Doha and Dubai among others, which have also played a role in increasing passenger traffic through Entebbe to about 1.5million. The Emirates daily flights between Entebbe and Washington will connect through the Emirates hub of Dubai. Washington Dulles is considered one of the top international airports in the US and has an annual passenger turnover of 9 million.

According to Alzarouni, the flights between Entebbe and DC will cost US$1,130, US$4,200, and US$8500 for economy, business and first class respectively. East Africa has gained significant attention  following business interests for its nascent oil and gas sector. Travellers range from experts and technical staff from companies like Halliburton and Baker Hughes. Alzarouni however notes that Entebbe International Airport standards need to be improved more especially the lounges and duty free shop.

“There are a lot of opportunities for Uganda and how I wish they could expand the airport. The airport needs more duty free shops and much bigger space for lounges,” he points out. “The region is growing and as Emirates we intend to invest further. If the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) needs us to invest, we are willing to pay for our own new lounge at the airport.” The CAA has previously said it has a master plan for the expansion of the airport and its facilities; however it is marred by financial challenges for it to achieve this plan.
