Bank Of Uganda Launches UGX 1000 Commemorative Uganda@50 Coin

Bank of Uganda launched the UGX 1000 commemorative coin in celebration of the 50th Independence anniversary of the Republic of Uganda on Friday September 28, 2012 in a ceremony held at the Bank of Uganda Headquarters in Kampala. The coin will complement other existing coins of Sh.50, sh100, sh200, sh50o and other existing paper notes of sh1000, sh2000, sh5000, sh10,000, sh20,000 and the biggest note of sh50,000.

Bank of Uganda has over the years issued commemorative currency for various historical events of both national and international importance.

These include:

  • A commemorative coin issued in 1968 to mark the World Food Day of the Food and
  • Agricultural Organisation (FAO) on the theme ‘Produce More Food.’
  •  Commemorative coins to mark the visit of His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, to Uganda in 1969.
  • A commemorative coin issued in 1981 to mark the International Year of Disabled Persons.
  • Commemorative coins issued in 1986 and 2006 to mark Bank of Uganda’s 20 and 40 years of service respectively.
  • A commemorative Bank Note issued in 2007 to mark the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) hosted in Uganda.
