New African Jazz Maestro With Roots To Uganda | Somi Returns to Boston!

Somi is an American singer & songwriter of Rwandan and Ugandan descent and this coming Thursday, August 1st, 2013, Somi will return to one of her favorite Boston venues – the venerable Sculler’s Jazz Club! This show will mark her first concert in New England since leaving for her 15-month creative sabbatical in Lagos, Nigeria in 2011.

So come BE AMONG THE FIRST to hear some of her new material. Tickets are only $25 for the show or $65 for the show and dinner. Somi will be joined by Otis Brown III (drums), Liberty Ellman (guitar), Toru Dodo (piano), and Michael Olatuja (bass).

Sculler’s Jazz Club is located at 400 Soldiers Road at the DoubleTree Suites. Doors at 6:30PM. Performance begins at 8:00PM sharp.

Somi’s full name is Laura Kabasomi Kakoma (daughter of Elizabeth Nyarubona Kakoma and the late Dr. Ibulaimu Kakoma) She is half Mnywarwanda and half Mutooro, but grew up in Champaign, Illinois and currently lives in New York City. Her last album debuted at #2 on the World Billboard Chart and featured the legendary Hugh Masekela. She is a TED Global Fellow, an Association of Performing Arts Presenters Association’s Inaugural Fellow, and the recipient of Doris Duke Foundation’s FAJE Award. She also holds a Master’s degree in Performance Studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and is the founder of non-profit organization New Africa Live.
