Ugandan Diaspora Gala 2013 Highlights In Pictures – Volume 1
The long awaited 3rd annual Ugandan Diaspora Social Networking gala was held on Monday 30th December 2013 at Kampala Serena hotel amid-st pomp and glamour. The evening that began with a networking cocktail saw vendors targeting the diaspora showcase their products and services.
Later the crowd was ushered into the cozy Victoria Ballroom for a sumptuous dinner and entertainment that included fashion by Solome Katongole and Martha Jabo, comedy by Daniel Omara, solo performances by Jazz artist Bedford Buyungo, Uganda’s hip hop legend Daniel Kigozi a.k.a – Navio, Xtreme Ministries – dance troupe and live music from Band Aroma.
In keeping with the tradition this year’s awards recognized Winnie Byanyima – The Executive Director Oxfam International and wife of Uganda’s leading opposition politician retired Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Commissioner Rhoda Tumusiime – one of the eight Cabinet secretaries/commissioners at the Africa Union in Addis Ababa, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, a Ugandan Hollywood movie star, whose role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamonds gave him world acclaim and recognition, Patrick Masambu – Deputy Director International Telecommunications Satellite Agency, Philanthropist and newly appointed President – the International Association of the Banyakigezi Ruth Ndyabahika.
This year’s Ugandan Diaspora Lifetime Achievement award was presented to his excellence the Vice President of Uganda Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi for his interest and support for Diaspora Affairs. In his acceptance speech the Vice President promised to declare the award as a gift in conformation with Uganda’s penal code act!
Other highlights included presentations from various sponsors including the new proposed Bank of Uganda – Diaspora bond, The Uganda Investment Authority Diaspora Compendium, property and banking opportunities and a keynote address from Angel Jones of the Homecoming Revolution Africa. Other speakers included the Patron – Ugandan Diaspora Network Prof. Dr. Maggie Kigozi and the Guest of Honor H.E. The Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi. This year’s gala was attended by 400 guests that included the new Ugandan Ambassador to Canada and the Deputy US Ambassador to Uganda!
