Kampala — The NRM parliamentary caucus has endorsed President Museveni to stand unopposed for the party presidency in 2016. According to the NRM Constitution, the party President becomes the flag-bearer in the presidential elections.

The proposal was made by Northern Youth MP Evelyn Anite and it was seconded by MPs John Simbwa (Makindye East), Hatwib Katooto (Katerera) and the deputy Minister for Karamoja, Ms Barbara Oundo Nekesa, according to statement issued by State House last night.

The offer, which according to the statement was unanimously supported by the caucus, was made during a luncheon held at the Rwamasindi Abasonga Presidential farm in Ngoma, Nakaseke District.

The statement said that the eventful day started with interdenominational prayers at NALI in Kyankwanzi before members were led on a five kilometer health walk by the President from Kyankwanzi to the farm. They crossed River Mayanja by canoe.

The MPs said in their proposal that they realised the role President Museveni has played in ensuring peace, security, democracy and social economic transformation among other things, urging him to stand unopposed in 2016. “This proposal is out of coordination among members. It is not out of emotions or excitement but focus,” Ms Oundo said amidst chanting of NRM slogans and clapping.

The President, who is also NRM party chairperson, didn’t respond to the proposal raised by the MPs but instead invited them to tour the farm. The farm now sits on a four square mile piece of land and has more than 5,000 head of cattle and other animals given to him by Ugandans as donations.

Former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya has shown interest to stand for presidency using the NRM ticket.

Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has also been said to eye the top seat. He has, however, not publicly talked about it. At a recent function in his constituency, Mr Mbabazi said its the NRM which chooses its leaders.
