As has now become an annual custom for the Government of Uganda, Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) in collaboration with other relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) is organizing a business summit that brings together the Ugandans in the Diaspora to focus on investment opportunities back home.

This year, the Home is the Best 2015 Summit is scheduled to take place in Masaka town at the Brovad Hotel under the theme Realizing my Dream Investment’. The core objectives of this summit are to:

  1. Rejuvenate the economy of  Greater Masaka through increasing the productivity of agricultural products and investing in tourism services and the creation of tourism products
  2. Review the achievements of the last 8 summits in order to gain strategic direction that will benefit all the participants (both those residing in the Diaspora and their partners and / or stakeholders in Uganda)
  • Further strengthen the Uganda diaspora partnership with private sector through trade, investment and transfer of expertise and technology, as well as interaction with public sector back home through dialogue and exchange of ideas in formulating enabling policy for Ugandans in the Diaspora to engage favourably in Uganda’s development
  1. To highlight the Greater Masaka Industrial and Business Park being spearheaded by the Vice President H.E. Edward K. Ssekandi and whose foundation stone was laid by the President H.E. Yoweri K. Museveni early this year as a way of galvanizing investments closer to the six districts forming the Greater Masaka region
  2. Reaffirming the Ugandan Diaspora commitment to participate in the National Development Programs at a local level in all the regions of Uganda.

The Home is the Best Summit is a Diaspora event held annually and rotated regionally around the country to give Ugandans in the Diaspora an opportunity to appreciate the status of economic development in the country. The Summits enable them to realize the investment potential, so that they can invest in order to generate income for themselves and create employment for their other fellow Ugandans.

The summit last year in Gulu, was attended by well over 150 participants and attracted about 30 Ugandans from the Diaspora, who are still keen to invest in the areas of large scale agriculture and value addition, paper and furniture manufacturing right from tree plantations, waste management and renewable energy production. UIA is closely following up on these intentions to invest that will create jobs and reduce government expenditure on utilities and scholastic materials.

At this year’s Summit in Masaka, UIA, with the financial assistance from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hopes to host close to 150 Ugandans, with many of them coming from the Diaspora. Registration of their intentions to participate is ongoing. The Summit will include a business exhibition by SMEs seeking markets and business expansion partnership with the Ugandans in the Diaspora and their overseas acquaintances. There will also be public sector stalls to explain what government offers, a cultural gala, business to business networking and general entertainment.

These activities will be preceded by a high level dialogue in Kampala, between the Summit participants and a panel of discussants representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNDP, Uganda Investment Authority and Bank of Uganda. The deliberations will be streamed live to enable participation and contributions from the Ugandans in the Diaspora who will not be able to make it to Kampala physically. The dialogue will provide a new avenue for the Diaspora Ugandans to participate in the policy formulation processes, in which Government encourages inclusion from all sections of the Ugandan community.  We thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNDP for this innovation.

We also look forward to our usual collaboration with the Uganda Diaspora Network, coordinated by Mr Ronnie Mayanja, which will support the Diaspora event with a high level Diaspora Business Breakfast at the Kampala Serena and the annual Diaspora Social Networking Gala evening on the 29th and 30th December 2015 respectively.

On behalf of Uganda Investment Authority and Government, I would like to invite all Ugandans in the Diaspora, as well as all Ugandans wishing to do business with their fellow Ugandans residing outside Uganda, to attend the Home is Best Summit 2015 in Masaka from 17th to 18th December 2015. We envisage the closing of viable investment deals considering the contacts, expertise and savings made by the Diaspora Ugandans while away and the significant knowledge base and entrepreneurial spirit developed over the years by the resident Ugandans. Together, they can ‘realize their dream investment’ and contribute to the development of the economy.

The event will have powerful statements from the Katikiro of Buganda Kingdom as Guest of Honour and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who has been invited as Chief Guest.

The general public is most encouraged to come and engage with the Diaspora, the eminent guests and government agencies.

Thank you

Eng. Dr. Frank Sebbowa
